Content dating - being a good dealer
Posted by pbirnie under technology
There is now so much content out there - that products that allow people to see just the content that is relevant to them are in demand.
"supply and demand curves of information" - in normal economics if you supply something, people need less of it. An example: we are in the desert and I sell you some water. There is a short supply of water so you are prepared to pay a high price for the water. However once I have sold you the water, I don't have it - I cannot sell it someone else and I cannot use it myself. Also now that you have water you don't need anymore of it.
Contrast with information:
I have a rare piece of information about a stock and I sell you this information, I still have the information myself and I can sell the information to other people. The more people I sell this rare piece of information to the less valuable it is. The fact that I sold you this piece of information makes you want more of it. So information supply curve is like an addictive drug supply and demand curve. Well to a point - the problem is that there is so much information around. Our bodies are limited in how much of the rare information drugs we can process - so we need an information dealer that will give us the best experience we can have.
Enter content dating:
Product people often talk about "surfacing high value content" - this is often done using ranking algorithms - each piece of content is associated with "feature" attributes - such as user_rating (number of "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" ), publish_timestamp and category - an algorithm is used to rank this content and present highest value "hits" to the user.
However we as information dealers should focus more on building relationships - acting as a "dating agency" to match make a user and some content (information). Ranking algos should take into account "features" of the user and "features" of the author.
